Another large convention hotel is under construction downtown, just across the street from Austin Convention Center. Demolition crews are clearing the 0.81-acre site of the 31-story Austin Marriott Downtown at 304 E. Cesar Chavez Street.
Indiana-based hotel developer and management company White Lodging Services is developing the 530,000-sf property that will include 613 rooms and ground-level restaurant/bar.
The project will include “Great Streets” streetscape improvements and will obtain an Austin Energy Green Building 2-star rating. The new hotel will also utilize Austin Energy’s Downtown District Cooling (chilled water) system.
The general contractor for the project is DPR Construction, who also teamed with White Lodging on the JW Marriott and Aloft/Element hotels. White Lodging also recently developed the Westin Austin Downtown. HKS is the project’s architect. With four levels of below-grade parking, there will be several months of excavation before any vertical construction is visible from street level.
Marriott’s website currently lists the hotel’s opening date as March 2020. We will continue to bring you updates on this project and other hotel projects as details emerge.
