August 4, 2017 by BuildingATX Staff

Will downtown Austin soon be home to one of the tallest towers in Texas?

The Statesman and the Business Journal are reporting today that a 62-story tower is being planned at the northwest corner of West 6th Street and Guadalupe Street, rising 850 above the pavement.

If built, the proposed tower would be 6th in a ranking of the tallest buildings in the state of Texas. Currently, Dallas and Houston claim 19 of the top 20 tallest buildings in the state. (source)

The site, which is currently home to an Extended Stay America and surface parking lot, will be developed by Lincoln Property Company and Lynd Company. Both companies are based in Texas and have a history of projects completed in the Austin area.

A Capitol View Corridor crosses much of the site and will dictate the general shape of the tower. A copy of the CVC document issued by the City of Austin is posted below. In addition, there is a historic house on the northeast corner of the site that was built in the 1850’s and will remain intact.

Gensler is the architect behind the proposed tower. The firm is behind several high-profile projects currently under construction downtown, including the Third+Shoal office tower, Fairmont Austin hotel, and 500 West 2nd Street office tower.

According to the Statesman, “Lynd said the firm will be submitting plans for the project to the city of Austin in the near future, and anticipates breaking ground in nine to 12 months.” We will bring you updates on this project as they become available.
