The University of Texas at Austin answered a lingering question this week: where construction of a new basketball arena will take place, since the existing Erwin Center will be torn down as part of the Dell Medical School expansion. The university announced that it plans to build a new arena close to campus.
The proposed new basketball facility will take shape in what is now a parking lot south of the Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field. That would put the arena much closer to other University of Texas facilities than the Erwin Center’s current location, at 1701 Red River Street.
UT Austin President Gregory Fenves said in a statement that the school is “considering a plan to build the arena south of the Mike A. Myers track stadium, though we have not yet determined the precise footprint, scope, or cost of the facility.”
The Austin American-Statesman reports that the 2016 Texas Athletics Master Plan identified a few on-campus sites for an Erwin Center replacement, with the parcel named in the announcement listed as a preferred site. Should it go through with plans to build on that site, the Statesman reports, Red River Street and Robert Dedman Drive, on either side of the site, would be straightened.
There’s not yet a timeline for when construction would take place, or how long it would take.
“The campus master plan developed in 2012 called for the land under the Erwin Center to be used for future expansion of the Dell Medical School and the UT Health District,” Fenves said in a statement. “As we prepare for that, we will also ensure that our outstanding men’s and women’s basketball programs can continue to compete in a great arena.”
The medical district includes the new Seton Healthcare Family’s teaching hospital and Dell Medical School, as well as plans for a mix of uses that could include healthcare tenants, retail, and office space.
