The iconic Austin Motel on South Congress Avenue has a new owner and perhaps even more significantly, a new manager, one who’s already well known on that street: hotelier Liz Lambert.

Lambert’s hospitality company, Bunkhouse, took over management of the Austin Motel at 1220 S. Congress Ave.; Connecticut-based Greenfield Partners LLC bought the hotel recently, along with several other nearby properties, for an undisclosed price.

Lambert told the Austin American-Statesman that the hotel’s well-known sign will stay in place, as will its name. The motel has a pool and 41 rooms. While a purchase price was not disclosed, the property is appraised at $5.6 million.

Lambert also manages several other properties near the Austin Motel, including Hotel San José, the Hotel St. Cecilia, and a hotel still in the planning stages, The Magdalena. She owns Jo’s Coffee, which has two locations: one between the San José and the Austin Motel, and one on 2nd Street in downtown Austin.

Austin’s hotel market is booming, with approximately 7,800 hotel rooms available just in the downtown area, and another 2,140 hotel rooms under construction as of February, 2016, according to the Downtown Austin Alliance.
