Austin Bergstrom International Airport is bursting at the seams, and another expansion project is underway to provide additional space for travelers.
Three existing gates will be replaced and nine gates will be added to the east of the existing terminal, increasing the total number of gates to 33. In addition, the apron pavement area will be increased by almost 30 acres to handle the additional aircraft traffic. Overall, the improvements will increase operational capacity by 30 percent.
Hensel Phelps Construction has the $289 million contract to build the improvements. Gensler is the architecture firm leading the design team, and will receive up to $36 million for design services provided with the terminal expansion project.
The expanded terminal will accommodate approximately 4 million additional passengers per year when it is completed in 2019. Be sure to follow BuildingATX as we bring you periodic updates on this exciting project.
