Dual Hotel Tower Breaks Ground Downtown

September 4, 2015 by Kate Harrington

More hotel rooms are on the way for downtown Austin. On August 24, White Lodging Corp. broke ground on a 32-story hotel tower at Congress Avenue and East Seventh Street that will include two hotel brands, Aloft Austin Downtown and Element Austin Downtown.

White Lodging is the group that’s also behind two other recently-opened downtown Austin hotels, JW Marriott and the Westin Austin Downtown. Altogether, White Lodging manages 23 hotels in the Austin area, including the newest Aloft and Element hotels.

The Aloft will have 278 rooms, and the Element will have 144 rooms. Both are scheduled to open in the summer of 2017. A restaurant and bar are also planned along the Congress Ave. side. Although the hotels share a footprint, each will have separate entrances and lobbies on East Seventh St.

Dallas-based HKS Inc., a firm that has worked on other notable Austin hotels, is the architect. DPR Construction is the lead contractor. Below is a street-level rendering of the project looking toward the Texas Capitol. Click Here for more renderings and our original story about the project.

Austin currently has 8,300 hotel rooms in the downtown area – by 2017, that number will have grown to 11,000 downtown rooms, according to the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau.
