Downtown Demolition Projects Near 5th & Brazos (PHOTOS)

As you know, downtown Austin is changing fast. You may have noticed some changes near the corner of 5th & Brazos during the past few weeks, where two separate projects will be changing the look and feel of downtown.

Last September, we told you about Stream Realty‘s $30M renovation of the office building at 501 Congress. Part of the redevelopment involves demolishing the existing parking garage to make way for a taller 8-story garage on the same site.

The renovation work is well underway and we caught a glimpse of demolition crews taking down the garage:

This parking garage is being taken down to make way for a new 8-story garage.

Just one block east, a former Bank of America was razed, and has since been turned into a surface parking lot. A 50-story hotel/residential tower developed by Magellan Development Group has been rumored for the site, but there is no word at this time whether or not this project will be moving forward. Check out the site during demolition and shortly thereafter:

A Bank of America branch was demolished at 5th & San Jacinto.
The former bank site is now a parking lot. Will it be redeveloped soon?

Stay tuned to BuildingATX as we bring you updates on both of these projects.
