More than 1,000 apartment units are under construction around downtown Austin, and among them is Capital Studios, the first affordable housing community built in downtown in more than 45 years.
Capital Studios, which is slated to open this fall at 11th and Trinity Streets, will include 135 efficiency apartments for single adults that will range in rent from $400 to $650 per month, bills included. Residents will also have access to on-site social services. Foundation Communities is building the project using $11 million in federal housing tax credits to help finance construction. City of Austin bonds and private fundraising are also part of the funding. Foundation Communities will own and manage the apartments once they’re open.
The apartments support the Downtown Austin Plan, which calls for more affordable housing, as well as permanent supportive housing in downtown Austin. The project architect is Dick Clark + Associates, and BIG RED DOG is the civil engineer. SpawGlass is the General Contractor for the project. Check out this cool video of construction progress in February:
Foundation Communities owns and manages 10 housing communities around Austin, including M Station on East MLK Boulevard. That building is adjacent to the MLK Metrorail station, and is Platinum LEED certified.
